A Thomas O'Brien space is modern luxury at its finest. This room now combines vintage and cutting-edge pieces with simple lines, warm colors and lots of texture for a look that is classic and contemporary.

The other end of the room has a mix of styles and colors, which need to be changed to a more neutral palette.

Simple lines, rich textures and furniture/accessories that mix modern edge with traditional elegance transform this living room.
This living room has an identity problem--it could be described as modern, traditional or even old-fashioned. It combines old and new pieces, a staple of many of Thomas O'Brien designs, but unlike his interiors, it doesn't make a unified statement so interior designer Kevin Burns has some wonderful ideas about how to fix it:

  • The room is completely emptied so that Burns can get a good look at it. The nice bones are revealed including a neutral wall color, great mantel, wood floors and natural lighting.

  • A beautiful wool rug with a subtle traditional pattern serves a dual purpose--it has the classic feel of so many of O'Brien's designs plus it incorporates the neutral base that he favors.

  • For the seating area, Burns chooses a luxurious chenille gray couch and matching chair. Oversized with simple lines, the set was inspired by Gabriel Coco Chanel's sofa in her Paris apartment.

  • A dark wood coffee table and console are brought in, which contrast nicely with the neutral rug and furniture to create rich texture. Additional touches include wood and glass vessels and a dramatic abstract painting becomes the focal point.

  • The natural light is enhanced with wonderful geometric-shaped lamps.

  • The mantel was initially cluttered and confused so Burns edited this area to a few choice pieces--ethnic ceramics, a black and white photo of New York City and a cauldron with firewood.

  • Everything chosen for this room is low and the neutral colors give the elements a cohesive look. The furniture is set in a relaxed arrangement and the existing leather bench is more versatile now--its new location allows one to enjoy a warm fire or be part of the conversation simply by turning around.
