The homeowners have painted these cabinets several times but they still seem outdated and too thin.

Adding a routed groove around the edges completely changes their appearance and creates much-needed depth.
Materials:

router table
sandpaper
tack cloth or rag
oil-based primer
paint (base coat: Croquet Tan SW1141; top coat: Roasted Almond SW1143)
cabinet hardware (Amerock/Guardian: knobs #BP1592-G10; hinges #BP7328-G9) (Home Depot)

Steps:

1. Be sure the doors are thick enough for a routed design. If so, set up the router table with a guide at the desired groove distance (exactly two inches for the featured project).

2. Run each door across the router four times to achieve the look. Run each drawer front through three times (once across the center width and twice along the ends). If the cuts aren't perfect, use sandpaper as necessary to fix them (figure A) and remove dust with a tack cloth or damp rag.
3. To prepare the cabinets for painting, clean them to remove dirt and grease. Sand the surface using 220-grit paper and remove the dust. Prime with oil-based primer, and then paint as desired.
4. To add more dimension, apply paint two shades lighter than the chosen base coat using simple brush strokes for a striated effect.
