Rustic, old-fashioned charm meets a truly workable kitchen design in Sue Carter’s 21st-century kitchen. Host Joan Kohn visits the updated kitchen space of the 1920s Federal home, which was designed for serious baking and entertaining with the help of architect Michael Collins.

One of the highlights of the kitchen is a large copper farm sink with a period style French faucet and hand-forged pull. The sink is placed on an angle in a corner.

The expansive island, which provides ample staging and serving space, was topped with columns to help clarify circulation space. A stained-glass window high on the wall sheds borrowed light into the adjoining stairwell.
  • The greatest design challenge was adding space to the original kitchen within the confines of the lot. Additional eating space and a new back entry were added.
  • A two-tiered island keeps the work surface hidden from view. The upper level is perfect for a staging area or a landing area for caterers and servers. The buffered screened island also defines traffic flow through the kitchen from the back door to the rest of the house, keeping traffic out of the workspace. No stools are used to clutter the circulation area and so the back side is full of design detail, since it is completely exposed.
  • The spacious kitchen is perfect for multiple cooks, with several workstations throughout.
  • The country English look of the kitchen is achieved by using rustic materials. The dark cherry recessed panel custom cabinetry is offset by light beech flooring. Stainless steel is used sparingly on the cooktop and warming oven. The matte finish of the country limestone counters and tumbled marbled backsplash complete the rustic look.
  • Most baking is done in the redesigned old pantry, which functions as a mini kitchen. It has drawers with flour and sugar bins, a marble work surface, an under-counter oven and two extra refrigerator drawers. Cleanup is done in the copper sink and dishwasher.
