Artful Kitchen Space

Kitchen Design : Episode KDE-1105 -- More Projects »
Carol Lucas always wanted to live in an art gallery. In her new urban loft, she teamed with her architect, Stephen Chung of Mod. A, to create an artful kitchen in which materials are used in a sculptural way, and from which displayed art is visible from any direction. Host Joan Kohn tours the well-defined kitchen which is completely open to the rest of the living space.

Only three materials--wood, granite and stainless steel--were used in this simplified contemporary kitchen to create a background for artwork.

The dual-level island, with a granite work surface, flows seamlessly into the maple wall panel from the maple eating level suspended on stainless steel legs.
  • One entire wall of the loft is weathered brick that used to be the exterior wall of the adjacent building. To lighten the impact of so much brick, maple plywood paneling was hung along a portion of the wall. Its sculptural presence is punctuated with niches and shelves used to display artwork.
  • To create a restful background for the artwork scattered throughout the space, materials used for the kitchen were restricted to maple, granite and stainless steel. The effect is contemporary and serene.
  • Maple wood dominates the space. The maple floors are left uncovered except for area rugs; the cabinetry and island countertop are maple, and the commanding wall panel sculpture is maple plywood. The cabinets are devoid of hardware, which creates an even stronger wood presence.
  • Stainless steel adds function and beauty to a wide variety of surfaces. The stove and refrigerator are stainless, as are the backsplash, the pendant lights, the toe-kick area under the counter on the island, the faucets, and the chairs and stools.
  • Granite in a warm gray-rose-green combination is used for the kitchen’s counter surfaces. The dining table is made from the end of a granite slab and sits on top of five stainless steel columns.
  • Frosted glass niches are backlit for the display of a pre-Columbian art collection.
