Traditional Meets Contemporary

Bed & Bath Design : Episode BDE-1013 -- More Projects »
Terry Mollohan was careful to keep the original colonial look in the bedroom of his turn-of-the-century home. But in the bath, he opted for a more contemporary look that blends beautifully with the traditional bedroom. Host Joan Kohn visits this renovated and restored master suite to see the delightful results.

To bring light into the cramped bath, a dormer was added that vaulted the ceiling with a rolled arch, and an arched window was added above the two windows original to the home.

The large bedroom in this turn-of-the-century house remains true to its colonial heritage with deeply colored blue walls, high contrast white wood trim and dark furniture.

The original tub was replaced with a 42-inch corner tub that takes up much less space.

Because the walls of the dormered bathroom are not flat, the vanity mirror was installed in two pieces that follow the shape of the wall.
  • The bedroom is full of traditional colonial elements: the walls are covered with a deep blue paper that has a subtle floral print; the beautiful woodwork and moldings are all painted a light crème; the furniture is dark mahogany.
  • The original windows in the bedroom were completely refurbished. They were removed, sanded down to bare wood and repainted, and the glass was replaced.
  • The bathroom was enlarged and brightened by adding a dormer. Architect Julie Roche of Marlow Building and Design created a raised ceiling that was rolled to compliment the shape of the arched window installed over the two original windows.
  • The materials in the bath are completely modern: the vanity is solid surface in a soft pink; ceramic tiles in a soft khaki are used for the corner tub/shower surround; the cabinets, both under the vanity and the floating cabinet on the other side of the room, are light birch; fixtures are chrome.
  • Period touches were included in the bath to help it blend with the traditional bedroom. The beadboard wainscoting is painted a soft green, and a period toilet was used.
