English Country Bathroom
Decorating Cents : Episode DCT-1601 -- More Projects »
Designer Susie Burke joins host Joan Steffend to create an English country-cottage look in a plain master bathroom. Here's how they do it:
- The walls are painted a soft green color to warm up the space.
- The plate-glass mirror is cut down to fit inside a frame made from an old porch railing.
- A light fixture with delicate lines is added above the mirror and beaded bottle jackets are slipped over the frosted shades for more vintage appeal. New nickel drawer pulls on the vanity and matching switchplates add a polished look.
- The homeowners didn't like how exposed the tub area was, so Burke and Steffend draped the window with a valance and created a more elaborate version for the tub. A large panel and valance are gathered at the top and hung from simple cup hooks screwed into the ceiling. The shower door is also partially hidden from view with another panel and valance set.
- The clothes rack next to the door is created from a salvaged corbel and finished with shelves on top and bottom and hooks at different levels.
- An outdoor planter is attached to the wall and used to hold decorative towels.
- The homeowner's teacups and saucers are brought in for more vintage Victorian charm. The saucers are displayed in an arc over the planter basket and the cups hang from hooks under the mirror shelf.
- An unfinished country-style table the homeowner had purchased at a craft store is turned into a book rest that fits across the tub.
- Finishing touches include another outdoor planter used to create a hanging candle chandelier, votive holders made from baby-food jars, a floral rug and various bath accessories.

Transform a country-style pine bench into a book rest that fits over a tub.

|
How-to: Book Rest
Steps:
- Remove the leg(s) from one side of the table.
- Attach a small board and towel rack to the top for a place to hold a book or magazine.
- Paint the table with a white base coat. Use scissors to notch out "teeth" on a squeegee. Mix paint with glaze and apply with a roller. Drag the squeegee through the paint in both directions to create a gingham pattern.
- Add hooks to hold bath accessories and attach rubber stoppers to the leg to prevent it from moving.
