Kitchen Gadgets
Room by Room : Episode RXR-1602 -- More Projects »
Whether you cook a lot or not, it's exciting to see all the possibilities that make today's kitchen so attractive and convenient: - Use cutlery dividers to keep drawers organized and roll out shelves for pots and pans.
- Add convenience with a pullout cutting board in a drawer that's removable for cleaning.
- Keep spices in a drawer designed to hold them at an angle right next to the stove.
Put Lazy Susan cabinets in corners for canned goods and other food items to avoid wasted space (figure A). Tray dividers built into a cabinet are a popular choice.
Blend appliances into the surroundings with fronts that match the cabinetry such as this dishwasher (figure B). Many American kitchens are being influenced by European ones, which tend to be more contemporary in style but also much smaller. Be sure to incorporate lighting in your design--above, within and below the cabinets . One of the newest lighting sources is fiber optics. It provides great white light but color wheels can also be used.
Hang everyday utensils, spices and paper towels from S-hooks on a bar mounted below the cabinets (figure C). Put extra outlets on an island so it can be used as a mixing or carving station . Consider built-in wine racks at the end of a counter for secure storage. Pullout drawers enable you to easily reach the items in the back.
Install a steamer with a pasta insert that drains into the nearby sink right on the counter (figure D). Fun fact: Families spend more time in the kitchen than any other room--over 175 hours per month.
