Designer Jane Douglas shares a decorating dilemma. A family room's fireplace mantel originally held three, 5" x 7" frames of the children who lived there. The mantel also held a variety of other elements, all approximately the same height. This caused the viewer's eye to make a clean sweep, and not really see anything. To remedy this problem, Douglas cleared the mantel, then propped up a large picture of the entire family, leaving space around the photo empty to give it more importance. Next, she grouped five candles and a silk plant around the photo, adding softness and a warm glow.
