Kitchen Design : Episode KDE-1012 -- More Projects »
Host Joan Kohn visits the expansive home of Bill and Cathy Raftery, who needed plenty of space for a large and growing family. The kitchen features two islands adjoined by a breakfast nook and family area, all of which are open to each other and separated by half-walls. Architect Michael Collins designed rooms that are rich in detail and function beautifully.

The breakfast nook adds a transition area between the kitchen and family room, all of which are open to each other.
  • Two large granite-topped islands keep the cook and kids separate and happy. The interior island is for food preparation and is close to the stove, sink and refrigerator . The second island does not interrupt food preparation, and provides plenty of space for eating and socializing.
  • Cabinetry is richly hued raised-panel cherry. Lighter wood floors complement the wood cabinetry.
  • A butler's pantry adds a period touch.
  • The large room feels cozy because of the islands' proximity and scale. Everything is just a few steps away.
  • Dual ovens and a five-burner stove help feed the large family daily and during holidays when extended family adds to the crowd.
