Before embarking on a do-it-yourself kitchen remodel, determine your budget and then comparison shop for the best price.
Kitchens are big-ticket remodels that can also be a big headache. But designer Allyson Rowen Taylor completely remodeled hers under budget and on time, without sacrificing quality. Here's how she did it:
  • She priced everything first and acted as her own contractor and then sub-contracted out the individual jobs to the plumber, the electrician and the carpenter, which saved 25%!
  • She didn't change any of the square footage or move any of the appliances or plumbing.
  • She priced commercially-finished cabinets and they were out of her budget. So, she contracted a carpenter to build what she wanted and had a painter finish them with three coats of lacquer and a primer.
  • She splurged on the cabinet handles and stainless-steel cooktop and saved money by eliminating the hidden hinges on the cabinets and utilizing domestic manufacturers for the faucet, sink basin and appliances.
