Bartholomew shares some contemporary holiday decor ideas using drapery finials, shiny roll insulation and dryer hose.

  • Glue pieces of cork to the bottom of drapery rod finials or cabinet pulls for unusual jar toppers (figure A). Fill the jars with spices, flavored oils or candy.
  • Create shiny ornaments out of lightweight insulation (figure B). Cut out two star shapes with slits in the sides and insert one into the other for a 3-D ornament.
  • For a contemporary design, use heat-resistant dryer hose to create a freeform lighted display (figure C). String lights on a piece of wire (to hold its shape in the hose), insert into the vent and twist the wire ends together to secure. Use on a mantel or as a wall sculpture.
  • Searching for a space to display holiday cards? Stack two tomato cages on top of each other to create a Christmas tree shape and attach cards with clothespins.
