Joan Steffend and designer Nan Sloan take on the challenge of transforming a sparsely decorated, oversized bedroom. First, the walls are painted a taupe color that works beautifully against the crisp white trim. The sliding glass door and opposite window are given prominence with floor-to-ceiling window treatments and elegant cornice boards. The bed is addressed next--a faux headboard is created with batting, fabric, fluted casing and corner rosettes and yards of fabric are used to create the illusion of a faux-poster bed. A small garage sale dresser is painted white and set on top of the larger dresser to house the TV. A mirror is painted white and hung inside the former bookcase to create a quaint dressing area.

Project: Faux Headboard

  1. Draw a square on the wall above the bed.
  2. Staple batting and fabric directly on the wall within the square.
  3. Cover the raw edges of the fabric with fluted casing and corner rosettes.

Project: Faux Four-Poster Bed

  1. Secure a 1" x 2" board to the studs in the ceiling directly above the bed (on all four sides).
  2. Attach a 1" x 6" board perpendicular to the 1" x 2" board.
  3. Sew the fabric panels together and staple to the inside corners. Finish the inside with a 1" x 4" board.
  4. Attach crown molding on the outside of the 1x6 for a finished look.
