Baldus handpainted and stenciled the walls in her kitchen to make it feel more like an Italian villa.

Since the new island didn't leave room for a traditional dining table, Baldus created her own cozy breakfast nook along one wall.
Host Joan Steffend visits homeowner Becky Baldus in her 1938 home, complete with wonderful architectural elements like keyhole doors, original wall sconces, high banks of paned windows and a unique stone fireplace. Baldus shares some of the cost-saving ways she was able to decorate her home while retaining its charming character:
  • Instead of embarking on a complete kitchen remodel, she added three custom-built areas, including a new island, and shopped at outlet stores for appliances.
  • For a rustic wine-country look, she faux finished the walls and added handpainted images of grapevines, greenery and wine bottles.
  • She built a breakfast counter out of plywood, tiled it to match the backsplash behind the stove and used wrought-iron brackets to attach it to the wall. She handpainted more grapevine on an old window pane and placed it above the table.
  • The old linen closet was turned into a beautiful dry bar with a lattice work wine rack, glass-paned cabinet doors and a faux marble finish on the shelf insert.
