Choosing a Designer

Here are some tips for choosing and working with an interior designer:

Determine why you want an interior designer, how you want to use the space and how much you can spend.
Using a designer is a good choice when you don't have the time, resources or creative flair to get the job done yourself. Choosing a designer with a wide range of contacts, from furniture companies that sell only to the trade to specialized artisans, will enable you to explore many different design options.
The interview process is the most important step when working with a designer. Interview four or five designers and view their portfolios to see if their overall design style will complement yours. Visiting showhouses is also a good way to become familiar with a designer's work. And if the designer will be interacting with a third party, like a contractor and architect, make sure he or she has the experience to see that your vision is carried through.
