Trash to Treasure:
Decorating Cents : Episode DCT-501 -- More Projects »
To create an interesting breakfast/coffee table tray, find an old cabinet door with suitable dimensions. Then, simply add antique hardware or other decorative elements to personalize the piece. Here, Whittlef added a distinctive cabinet handle to each end of a white cabinet door, then attached four wheels from an old baby carriage to the door's sides, creating a tray that serves as a uniquely charming decorative accent.
Use old metal signs to add interest to any room. Due to their wide variety of shapes and sizes, these signs often provide the ideal accent for odd spaces that are difficult to fit with other types of art. Whittlef also suggests using an array of old signs to decorate a brand new house -- since a new home has little history, the worn look of the signs adds character and creates a nostalgic ambiance. Many old signs also make great tabletops -- simply fit or center a sign on top of an existing table, and secure in place by driving nails through the holes that were originally used to hang the sign.
