Use extra fabric to make a reversible table drape.
Pam Hastings shares some ideas for turning a monochromatic room into a springtime retreat with reversible bedding, window treatments and table drapes.

Ideas:

  • Cut two squares of fabric, put right sides together and sew around three edges. Insert pillow form and stitch the fourth edge closed.
  • For reversible pillow shams, use the above technique but secure the fourth edge with ribbon or buttons.
  • Create a bedskirt panel out of coordinating fabric. Attach hook and loop tape to the bed and the top edge of the back of the skirt (figure A). This enables you to keep your bed intact when changing the skirt.
  • For reversible window treatments, put right sides together and cut a wavy pattern along the bottom edge. Sew together, leaving a small opening to turn it inside out. Stitch the opening together once it's turned inside out and attach to drapery rod with small clips.
  • Use leftover fabric to create an elegant table drape (figure B). Put right sides together, sew almost completely around each edge, turn right-side out and stitch opening closed.

Seasonal Duvet

Materials:

6 yards each of two coordinating fabrics
thread
tape measure
pins
scissors

Steps:

  1. For the duvet front, cut one panel of fabric 91" long, and cut two panels of fabric 91" long by 34" wide. Repeat with the back of the duvet.
  2. Pin one narrow panel to each side of the center panel, right sides together. Stitch with a 1/2" seam allowance. Repeat with the back of the duvet.
  3. With the right sides together, pin the duvet front and back, right sides together, and stitch with a 1/2" seam allowance along the two sides and bottom edge.
  4. At the top edge, turn under 2" to the wrong side and press. Turn under 2" again and press. Stitch close to the fold.
  5. To make ties, cut 12 strips of fabric 3" wide by 8" long. Turn under and press 1/2" along each long edge of the tie. Turn under and press 1/4" at one short end of the tie. Fold the tie in half, wrong sides together, then press and topstitch close to each fold. Repeat for all ties.
  6. Mark the placement of the ties along the inside of the top edge of the duvet front and back. Pin ties in place at marks. Turn under 1/4" at the unfinished end of tie and stitch in place.
