Designer Krista Crawford joins host Joan Steffend to update a toddler's bedroom from a babyish nursery into an aeronautical-inspired boyish bedroom with bold red color, red denim and khaki fabrics and authentic aeronautical accessories. The walls are painted a deep red and a red sisal rug is used to anchor the rustic hand-carved twin bed in the room. Coordinating red denim and khaki fabrics are used for a box spring cover, pillowcases, a box-pleat window valance, window seat cover and chair slipcover. A reversible red and white quilt with embroidered stars is used on the bed. A mirror rescued from the trash receives a fresh coat of paint and is embellished with star tacks. The room lacks much-needed storage, so Crawford creates a simple rolling cabinet for the closet made out of 1" x 12" boards. A thin magazine rack--made from 1" x 6" board, beadboard paneling and dowel rods--is attached to the wall opposite the bed. An authentic propellor and star are mounted to a plywood circle and attached above the bed. An antique metal stove stand is transformed into a useful step stool with a plywood top wrapped in batting and fabric. The finishing touches are the shadow boxes that house the naval and commerical airlines wings that once belonged the young boy's grandfather.
