When homeowner Lisa Trnka moved to her condo from a larger house, limited space was a problem. Another major obstacle was presented by the '80s decor left behind by the previous owner. To create a cozy cottage feel that combined the old with the new and also accommodated all her belongings, Trnka employed a number of creative decorating tactics. Several of her strategies are listed below.

  • Trnka took advantage of her 22-foot ceilings by creating a loft above her living room. The loft is the perfect getaway for reading or watching television, and it also adds an extra 150 square feet to the condo's floor plan. To save space on the lower level, Tranka installed a circular staircase up to the loft.
  • The bedroom off the living room was transformed into a home office that features lovely glass-paneled French doors that open up the space.
  • To achieve an attractive yet unified look, Trnka combined several old pieces with new pieces and used the same color palette throughout her home.
