Use furniture to divide one large room into several defined areas. Michaelsen placed her sofa and a chest of drawers back-to-back to separate her living room from her dining room.
Homeowner Connie Michaelsen has moved often, and after each move she has to consolidate her furniture. Right now her tiny loft apartment requires that she make the most of her space and furniture. Here are some of her creative decorating ideas:
  • Remember that mirrors do wonders for small rooms--their reflections provide the illusion of extra depth and space. Michaelsen displays her collection of glass and crystal candlesticks on the mantel in front of her mirror for a more dramatic display.
  • Consider using pieces of furniture that serve more than one purpose. Michaelsen doesn't have space for her piano and a dining table, so the piano serves as her dining table when guests come over. When she's not entertaining, she displays photos on the piano.
  • Decorate your home with a personal touch. Michaelsen has dedicated one entire wall to her friends' artwork.
