Light and Bright Bungalow
Kitty Bartholomew: You're Home : Episode KIT-1201 -- More Projects »
Small rooms usually require small furniture but that's not the approach designer Carrie Quinn took when decorating her 1,000-square-foot cottage. Here's how she made her small home look very special:
- The contrast of dark wood furniture and white slipcovered furniture combined with natural materials helps to create a monochromatic neutral background, enhancing the natural light and enlarging the look of each of her rooms. Color is brought in through accents, like pillows and side chairs.
- She's chosen flexible furnishings over the years to outfit her various living spaces, including using a large trunk for a coffee table and suitcases stacked on top of bookcases for extra storage.
Another way to help enlarge a small space is to decorate with large-scale mirrors. The mirror at right is simply leaned up against the wall and can easily be moved from room to room.
Her bargain-shopping habits have also helped to decorate through the years. The $60 tapestry in the dining room has previously been displayed in her bedroom and hallway. French picnic chairs are paired with a more formal table and mismatched upholstered French side chairs add an elegant touch to the eclectic space.
The focal point in her bedroom is the bed with its beautiful canopy. The do-it-yourself canopy kit simulates the look of a four-poster bed with a ceiling-mounted frame and yards of fabric secured with hook-and-loop tape. The neutral background lightens the space and is complemented with eggshell-blue walls.
