Multicolored glass from Europe is being used in some of the most interesting contemporary lighting on the market.
Host Joan Kohn takes a look the myriad options available when lighting your kitchen. The key to good lighting in the kitchen is the type of fixture chosen and the placement of the lights. Many of the choices available are so beautifully crafted they are sculptures that glow.

  • The variety in lighting fixtures is endless, from styles – contemporary, country, traditional, Old World – to materials. Pewter, polished nickel, oil-rubbed bronze, polished brass and colored glass are just some of the materials used for today’s lighting fixtures.
  • When deciding how to light the kitchen, first define the main task and dining areas. Each zone should be lit independently.
  • The geometry and location of counters is also critical.
  • A classic mistake is over-lighting, so the room gets too hot. The goal is to have moderate, even lighting.
  • For design flexibility, the quality and intensity of the lighting should be easily controlled with switches.
