Family-Friendly Kitchen
Kitchen Design : Episode KDE-1113 -- More Projects »
Host Joan Kohn visits Christine and Jim Kelsey, who had very specific ideas for the kitchen in their new shingle-style home. They wanted an open floor plan, a large working island and new cabinetry. Working with designer Michelle Shields of The Great Room Company, they achieved their goal on a budget by splurging on certain items and using less expensive materials for others.
- The large U-shaped kitchen is flanked by a breakfast nook surrounded by a bay window, and a large family room separated from the work area by a half-wall and columns.
- The kitchen cabinetry is a simple recessed panel style in soft white with silvertone pulls. Kelsey painted the cabinets with a professional sprayer, finishing them with conversion varnish, which imparts a hard, professional-looking finish. Many of the upper cabinets have glass inset panels.
- The large center island is equipped with two barstools. It provides the kitchens main work surfaces. A marble inset is used for baking and hot-pot placement. Pull-out drawers keep appliances accessible and open storage under the counter makes it easy to reach utensils.
- Appliances are stainless steel with black accents. Flooring is dark walnut, and the backsplash is finished with white subway tiles. The counters are finished with squares of ceramic tile with a slate look, a budget-conscious choice that nevertheless has the look and feel of natural materials.
- A butlers pantry provides a link between the kitchen and dining room. It is painted soft blue, with white marble counters and glass panels in the upper cabinets.
- A walk-in pantry provides much-needed storage for large items like baskets and roasting pans.
