Fantasy Tour: Sleek and Contemporary

Kitchen Design : Episode KDE-1113 -- More Projects »
Host Joan Kohn tours the revamped kitchen that Bill and Mimi Karlyn built as the number of their grandchildren increased. Daughter Pamela Karlyn Mazow designed a sleek, contemporary kitchen that uses geometric shapes and lines in a playful way and has comfortable, functional workspaces.

Stainless steel is used for a bank of cabinetry, wall ovens and refrigerator and freezer units.
  • The carefully planned kitchen has a minimum of ornamentation. The cabinets have full overlay doors and simple hardware. The number of materials is limited to marble for the counters, bleached ash for cabinetry and oak for the flooring. Appliances are stainless steel, which adds a reflective quality as well as another color to the simple palette.
  • The original kitchen footprint was bumped out to create a breakfast nook that has an amazing volume of space with the vaulted ceilings and tall windows intersected with long vertical mullion bars. The result is a light-filled room with intimate views of the carefully landscaped property.
  • The main dining table floats on a limestone medallion (with radiant heat for cold days) designed into the oak flooring. The ash dining table echoes the look of the cabinetry. It also has a stainless steel inset that repeats the steel used for the appliances.
  • A series of botanical print dishes displayed above the counter add a touch of color and whimsy.
