A warm wall treatment and heavy fabrics make this room inviting and comfortable in the colder months.

Slipcovers, a new furniture arrangement and lighter accessories immediately change the room for enjoyment during warm weather.

A combination of burgundy and gold tab-top draperies give a heavy winter feeling to the room and keep out some light when combined with wooden blinds.

Rectangular panels made of two coordinating fabrics hang between the mounting hardware on the existing rod for a soft touch of spring without blocking out light.
This room is a wonderful cozy living space, perfect for cold winter nights with a fireplace, dark colors and comfortable furniture. Shari Hiller and Matt Fox make simple yet strong changes and offer these tips to freshen a room for spring:
  • The furniture is moved into a new arrangement that faces the sofa away from the fireplace and toward the sun porch--great for warmer months.
  • A new rug with a soft yellow background replaces a burgundy one, which lightens the whole space.
  • Khaki slipcovers and pillows made of the same window treatment fabrics lend a muted tone. Tip: Insert a wooden rod between the couch/chair back and seat to help hold them in place but be prepared for an unstructured look with slipcovers.
  • Switch dark lampshades and bases with ones in lighter colors.
  • Remove artwork better suited for cold months and replace it with lighter,spring-themed pieces. Add natural accessories such as forced bulbs (or silk flowers) in moss-covered clay pots.
