  • Turn up the volume on beige colors (figure A) by mixing and matching various shades of beiges and creams.

  • Think of your rooms as fashion statements. Use the same clues and ideas that you like in fashion and apply them to your rooms. For instance, adding a valance (figure B) can give the room a taller, thinner appearance. This valance has been installed higher than the window, thereby "heightening" the room.

  • Check out these dramatic window dressings (figure C). The colors harken to the Napa wine valley, full of deep blues and purples. The top wall color is a pinot noir with a burgundy base below the chair rail. Four shades on one wall, all in the same family, can be pulled together with the curtains. The silver holdbacks act as buttons and can be easily adjusted to any height.
