Some ideas for fast window treatments:
To dress up functional-looking and uninspired mini-blinds, try suspending a dowel and support above the window and wrapping seasonal silk vines over it. Consider ivy in spring, a grape vine in summer, fall leaves and pine garland at Christmas.
Cornices are popular again for their custom look, easy construction, and small price tag. Measure the width of the window. The length for a cornice is usually about 1/4 of the width . Use 1x4 pine for the frame and plywood for the face. Wrap with batting and staple on material. Mount with an L-bracket. A stained or painted piece of molding adds an elegant touch.
For a country look with mini-blinds, suspend bunches of dried flowers with raffia from a wooden dowel mounted above the window.
Pine shutters provide rustic-looking privacy and light control. Measure the width of the window and divide by four; this gives the louver width. The height of the window give the length. Cut pine boards to measure. Rub on watered-down latex paint by hand, allowing the grain of the wood to show through. Attach brass hinges to the panels and add decorative pulls. Mount at the side of window.
For a quick, low-cost topper for mini-blinds, remove the rod and leave the bracket above the window. Using a rectangular tablecloth, fold the fabric accordion-style . Gather one end and secure to the bracket with a rubber band. Play with the fabric until it resembles a rosette. Repeat on the other side.
