Transform louvered closet doors into a stylish window shutter that provides light control and privacy when necessary.
Materials:

pair of louvered closet doors
circular saw
long level or straight board
quick -release clamps
measuring tape
mending plates
hinges
friction hinge support
board for cleat
paint (base coat: Artisan Tan SW1145; top coat: Rouge Red SW1301 )

Steps:

1. Choose shutters that will create the necessary width and cut them to length using a circular saw with a guide such as a long level or board and quick-release clamps. To set up the guide, measure the distance from the blade to the base plate of the saw (this is the distance that the guide needs to be placed from the mark of the cut on the shutter). Make the cut, being careful to keep the base flat against the guide. Repeat on the other shutter.

2. Secure the shutters to each other using mending plates and paint or stain them as desired (the paints listed along with crackle medium yielded the crackled finish in the featured project).

3. Attach a cleat with hinges secured to it above the window, which will hold the shutter in place (figure A). Flip the hinges up and screw them to the top of the shutter. Once it's hanging, attach the friction hinge support to allow the shutter to open, close or remain in any desired position.
