Window & Door Treatments

Our Place : Episode OPL-322 -- More Projects »
Joe Zanger takes a look at the work of Miami interior designer Marive King. She uses beautiful and practical window and door treatments for a high-rise apartment that are minimal enough to let in the view but strong enough to keep out UV rays, which can be harmful to the art inside.

Figure A--Marive King had a difficult design task ahead of her--a condominium with a gorgeous view of the ocean and a one-million dollar art collection inside. It was clear that the window treatments would play a vital role. The kitchen was a particularly tough area because of the brutal afternoon sun. Here, King used a tinted polyester material with an aluminum layer that allows only two percent of UV rays through.

Figure B--King's research of art galleries and museums yielded quite a find for the living room--panels of fiberglass mesh covered with plastic. With this product, Miami's Biscayne Bay and Fisher Island can come into the home, but 86 percent of UV rays are kept out. Another fantastic feature of these shades is a clutch that allows the shade to stop anywhere with the pull of a string. The ends are weighted so that there is no skewing from end to end.
