Materials:
MDF (medium density fiberboard) core or hard wood shelf (larger than window by a few inches on either side)
latex paint (maroon)
Copper Topper
polyurethane clear finish (optional)
Patina Solution (optional) (Patina Green or Patina Blue Solution)
wrought iron shelf brackets (Bridgeport bracket was featured)
maroon spray paint for metal
1/2" copper pipe cut to shelf length
2-1/2" copper pipe caps
Steps:
- Paint shelf with maroon paint and allow to dry.
- Paint shelf with copper paint, including the underside (figure A). Let dry.
- Apply polyurethane (optional) if you don't want the color to change. Since the copper paint has real metal flakes in it, it will age and turn green in time. Or apply the Patina Solution to make the copper age quickly.
- Clean shelf brackets with rubbing alcohol to remove any grime, etc. Spray-paint them (figure B) and let dry for two to three hours.
- Sponge copper paint onto the brackets--don't cover the entire surface(figure C). Let dry.
- Dip the ends of the bracket screws into copper paint and let dry.
- Measure window and place brackets on the underside of the shelf so that they clear the window and trim. Mark the bracket holes, drill pilot holes into the underside of the shelf and screw in place.
- Attach the shelf and brackets over the window.
- Put pipe caps on each end of the pipe--these are usually snug and don't require glue.
- Lay the copper pipe on some part of the bracket, a few inches away from the wall.
- Hang tab-top draperies, plants or other items from the rod for decoration.
