Steps:
  1. Determine desired size of shutters. Mark the lengths on 1" x 3" pine boards and cut with a miter box. This creates the 45-degree angle corners as well.
  2. Run the inside edge across the rabbit bit of a router on a router table. Raise the blade a little bit for each pass.

  • Once the sides are done, join the four pieces with wood glue and nails (figure A). Paint, stain or distress shutter frame as desired. Preserve twigs with a clear coat of polyurethane.
  • Cut twigs to size with pruning sheers, bend as needed to fit into slots and slide them tightly together (figure B). Add hinges, a clasp and hang (figure C).
