Designer Michael Buchanan shares some tips on the window treatment challenge to have light come in while keeping privacy:
  • Be sure to use some form of a treatment, however minimal--they soften the architecture of the room, add color, privacy and drama.
  • If drapes are too bold, try some of the various shades, which maintain a clean look and add wonderful visual texture. Matchstick and Venetian blinds, and burnt bamboo shades are all good options that add rich color and texture.
  • Sheers and valances are another way to add decorative treatments to windows without the sense of heavy drapes (figure A).
  • Glass block allows light without the ability to see in--not even silhouettes (figure B).
  • Treatments help to avoid a sense of vulnerability when looking out of black holes at night. Even a sheer helps alleviate this feeling.
