Pocket Window Panel
Materials:

several yards of loose-knit fabric, enough to cover the window (featured project used burlap)
various lengths of sheer fabric to create pockets (try chiffon, organza, etc.)
sewing machine or fusible webbing
scissors
dried flowers
decoration
decorative curtain rod
curtain rod clips

Steps:

  1. Measure the inside of the window frame. Add 4 inches to the length of this measurement and cut the burlap fabric to this dimension.
  2. Across the bottom edge, slowly pull an individual thread from the burlap, fringing the edges. Note: Practice the next step on a scrap piece of burlap to achieve the desired effect before beginning on the shade.
  3. To create a grid pattern on the shade, cut individual threads along any selvedge edge to release them from the finished edges. Pull only a few threads to form a narrow strip about 3/4 inch wide. Any more than this will cause the fabric to lose support. Pull threads both vertically and horizontally to create a grid pattern.
  4. To make pockets for the shade panel, cut squares of sheer material that fit into the squares outlined in grid pattern created in step 3. Add about 1/2 inch to all sides of the small squares before cutting. This extra fabric allows the squares to be folded back and attached to the shade.
  5. Sew or use fusible webbing to attach the squares to the shade. Be sure to attach the left, right, and bottom edges to the shade, leaving the top edge open for a pocket. Place small arrangements of dried flowers or other decorative objects inside the pockets.
  6. Attach panel to curtain rod using curtain rod clips.
