Add cheerful color to your draperies with May Day tiebacks.
Materials:
scissors
tin cans or glass Mason jars
Mod Podge
paintbrush
seed packets
hammer and an extra-large nail
ribbon
wired garland of greenery
flowers of your choice
cup hooks
Steps:
- Remove paper label from the outside of a tin can. Place nail about 1/8 inch from top lip of the can and hammer it completely through, pushing the nail out through the inside and leaving a hole in the can. Do this to other side of can as well.
- For a rustic, antique look, tear around (in a downward direction) the design from a seed packet to paste to the front of the can.
- Brush Mod Podge on the back of the seed packet and onto the can where you want to place the design.
- Position the design on the upright can as fast as possible after applying Mod Podge because it dries quickly.
- Brush Mod Podge over the entire face of the design, overlapping onto the can.
- Let Mod Podge dry completely.
- Cut the ribbon to the desired length for the can to hang. Allow enough extra ribbon length to thread through the can holes and tie in a knot with a short streamer.
- Thread the ribbon through the nail holes from the inside of the can to the outside and secure by knotting the ribbon just outside of the nail hole, leaving a short stream of ribbon hanging on either side of the can.
- Cut the streamer ends in a decorative V-shape by folding the ribbon edge to edge. Measure approximately one inch from the bottom. Let the streamers hang down or fashion a bow on either side of the can.
- Customize the can by placing various flowers inside. Use the can as a curtain tieback by simply looping and securing a second strand of ribbon, as before, through the nail holes. Wrap the ends of the second ribbon strand around the curtain and fashion in a knot. Secure the tie back to the wall with a nail or cup hook.
