To give a window a new, impressive look, you can transfer designs from the '50s onto regular store-bought window treatments, then add color with fabric paint. Guest Bunny DeLorie explains how.

Materials:

window curtain panel or sheet
Bunny Burner transfer tool
Yasutomo FabricMate Brush Tip Pens in red, green, blue, yellow and black
Yasutomo Permawriter II Pen, black #03
black and white copies of 1950s designs*
scissors

* Find these designs at your local library or bookstore.

Steps:

  1. Wash and dry the window curtain panel or sheet to remove any sizing on the material. Then iron it.
  2. Enlarge or reduce photocopies, as desired.
  3. Roughly cut around the edges of the designs.
  4. Heat transfer the designs onto the front of the curtain by placing the design face down on the fabric, and slowly rubbing the back of the design with the transfer tool until the design is transferred.
  5. Outline the designs with the Permawriter II, and let the ink dry about 10 minutes.
  6. Color the designs with the brush tip pens. The ink will be permanent in about 24 hours.
