Materials:
postcards
table with a raised edge
double-faced adhesive sheets
gold embossing powder
embossing heat tool
craft knife and cutting mat
pour-on coating mixture
Optional: painted tabletop (omit gold embossing powder and double-faced adhesive sheet)
Steps:
- Cover top of table with double-faced adhesive sheet and remove protective paper.
- Use one postcard at a time. Cut them into various small pieces to use as mosaic tiles (omit any areas of the postcard that you don't like).
- Space the pieces on the sticky adhesive paper, leaving 1/4-inch to 3/8-inch spaces between them to simulate grout lines (figure A).
- Cover the eraser end of a pencil with fabric so it won't scratch the cards and use it to gently burnish the tiles in place. Be careful not to touch the exposed adhesive between tiles.
- Sprinkle embossing powder over the table (figure B). Shake excess onto a newspaper and return to jar for future use.
- Use the heat tool to emboss the grout areas (figure C). Be careful not to overheat because the adhesive might curl. Option: Instead of embossing areas between the pieces, paint a tabletop in desired color. Apply double-faced adhesive to the back of the postcards before cutting them, remove backing and stick cards in place before sealing the top.
- Coat entire surface with glue and allow to dry.
- Following manufacturer's directions, seal the top of the table with pour-on coating, being sure not to touch it until completely dry. Add a second or third coat if desired, drying between applications.
