Recycled computer chips and brass screws are mixed into a special lightweight concrete to make custom tiles.
David Hertz, owner of Syndesis, Inc., makes custom tiles out of a new product he developed. Syndecrete weighs half as much as concrete and is twice as strong. Kitty Bartholomew visits Hertz to see how he incorporates recycled materials, like crumbled tires, computer chips, TV knobs, gilette disposable razors, even Swatch watches and Bart Simpson figures, into the tile-making process. He shows Bartholomew how to make a tile clock face, using a mold, letter shapes, leaves, and a clock mechanism available at craft stores. He cautions that the pattern used will be reversed when the tile is unmolded.
