The ceiling--instead of the floor--in the dining room received an elaborate tile treatment.
The options for decorating with tiles are only as limited as the imagination. Kitty Bartholomew visits the historic Adamson house, built in 1929 for the family of the Malibu Pottery Tiles Company. The family had unlimited access to tile and used it extensively throughout the house.
  • Several full-length tile panels decorate the exterior of the home.
  • The home has two tile fountains outside.
  • The walls of the small entry porch are tiled and broken tiles, believed to ward off evil spirits in Moorish myth, are laid across the threshold.
  • The entry hall floor has tiles laid to look like Persian rugs.
  • The floors and walls in the kitchen are tiled in teal, red and black tiles in a number of patterns. The counter top and table tops are also tiled. Even the electric wall clock is tiled with an elaborate pattern.
  • In the dining room, the floor is tiled in muted colors and bordered with a patterned tile. The ceiling is brightly tiled with a large pattern tile.
  • The treads of steps are tiled.
  • The bathroom is floor-to-ceiling tile. A Moorish pattern is used, and broken up by bands of solid tiles. The ceiling is tiled in an elaborate pattern.
  • The fireplace is also tiled. The hearth is a mix of broken tiles and brick, and over the mantel is a colorful tile inset.
