Host Joan Kohn visits with Adam Ganzermiller of Universal Marble and Granite, Inc ., to learn about choosing natural stone for the kitchen. Granite has been a popular choice over the last few years for its beautiful, traditional look, durability, warmth and color.
- Hardness: On a scale of 1-10, with diamonds being a 10, granite has a hardness of 7-9. Marble has a hardness of 4-7, making it a better choice as an accent in less used areas. It should always be honed and sealed.
- Price: Low grade stone is $20-30/square foot; medium grade is $40-60/sf; highest grade begins at $60/sf and goes up from there.
- Variety: Marble and granite come in a huge variety of colors and characteristics . Some have metallic flecks, others vary in the amount of movement (swirls) present , or the density of the pattern. Veining is another characteristic which some people love for its natural look, and others avoid. Veining does not affect structural integrity of the stone.
- Maintenance: Marble should be cleaned with a mild soap/water solution. Granite can be cleaned with a mild vinegar/ water or soap/ water solution.
