Materials:

white satin latex paint
red latex paint (or desired color)
cheesecloth
foam brushes
natural sponge
ruler
paper towels
1/4" masking tape
pencil
1/2" plywood

Steps:

  1. Measure backsplash area and cut plywood to fit. Allow for any sockets by cutting out that area. Apply one coat of white paint.
  2. Determine the width of the backsplash squares. Measure and mark with a ruler.
  3. Outline backsplash and mark line of squares with masking tape. Burnish edges with fingernail to protect from paint.
  4. Mix three parts red paint (or desired color) with one part water.
  5. Paint several random squares with diluted paint.
  6. Choose squares to be sponge-painted with the same diluted solution and a natural sponge. Dip damp sponge in paint, blot on paper towel and change direction of sponge often.
  7. Paint remaining squares (one at a time) with damp cheesecloth dipped into same paint and wipe onto surface to create a washed look.
  8. Remove tape to create grout lines. Attach to wall using hook and loop tape or nails.
