Emmerling uses baskets throughout her living room to add texture and store everything from blankets to gift wrap.
Host Mary Emmerling gives us a tour of her Santa Fe home and shows how she packed plenty of country into one small home. Her one-bed bedroom, one-bath home features a combined living room with a small kitchen. She opened up the house by using lots of white painted walls and slipcovered furnishings. She then added texture with Navajo rugs, metal accents, religious artifacts, rough-hewn doors and furniture, plus baskets galore. It all adds up to a tiny space that's packed with country charm.

To pack plenty of country character into a small space:

  • Keep walls light and bright to open up the spaces and to add the illusion that they're larger.
  • Use mirrors. Either one large mirror or a cluster of small ones reflect light and make the room appear larger.
  • Keep furnishings light in color. Use white denim slipcovers on sofas and chairs and accent with a few pillows in various colored fabrics.
