"Universal design" refers to the creation of a safe, accessible and functional space for anyone--regardless of age or physical ability. If you have the need or the desire to make some changes in your home, show host Sherry Ruggieri can help make a one-of-a-kind-space that really works, if you utilize these design basics:
- Eliminate the excess.
- Plan for an adaptable home.
- Keep a safe house.
Eliminate the Excess
Remove any barriers to movement in your home. Throw rugs, end tables, even cabinets can take up precious space and become a safety hazard. Do away with these for extra space and an extra sense of security.
Plan for an Adaptable Home
Time changes everything, so look for places in your current design that allow for accommodation. Plan for large open spaces, lower cabinets and counters and make controls accessible.
Keep a Safe House
Safety is a key issue. A functional bathroom might include a large roll-in shower (rather than stepping up and over the edge of a tub) and safety bars for balance and security at any age. Even if you don't need these elements right now, plan for the future. Look for places in your current design to adapt just in case you need to add them later.
Designer's Secret
Create an arrangement that allows accessibility--in any design, in any home--to reach the real things you need and use everyday.
