Winter Makeover

Your Holiday Home : Episode YHH-103 -- More Projects »
Designer Nan Sloan remakes a living room and dining area of a home to make them more suitable for entertaining during Thanksgiving and through the winter holidays.

She keeps the renovations simple and uses the homeowner's existing furniture. She uses deep, winter colors and appropriate accessories to replace a summer theme with a look much more suited to the season.

Figure A--Sloan creates a richer, cozier feel in this living room by bringing in dark fabrics and accessories with a winter theme. She starts by covering the hardwood floor with an inexpensive emerald green throw rug, then replaces floral throw pillows with some that feature a bolder design and warmer colors such as dark green and cranberry. A trio of pillar candles, a brass pitcher and other items replace a brightly colored orchid as a centerpiece for the cocktail table.

Figure B--The adjoining dining room is also warmed up with an elegant rug. Summe linens are replaced with a dark green table runner that coordinates with the color scheme in the living room.
