Art Nouveau Accents
Decorating With Style : Episode DWS-1060 -- More Projects »
Shirley Horowitz gives tips and insight into art nouveau style, which began in Belgium in the 1880s as a freer outlet for design. It was most successful as a system of interior architectural ornamentation:
- Always look for free-flowing plant lines in this style such as those that comprise this crystal fish bowl that can now be used to hold potpourri (figure A).
- Art nouveau is the period before art deco, which began in the 1920s.
- Turn a support used to hold wood in a fireplace into a lamp base.
Vases from the early 1900s are bulbous in form just as a plant would be with free -flowing handpainted designs (figure B ).
Use a candelabra made of steel that mimics vines and tendrils as a centerpiece (figure C). Iron umbrella stands in this style from the late 1800s were probably also used for canes.
Look for French advertising posters with free-flowing lines (figure D).
