Put a groovy spin on your home decor with mod design. A seamless blend of the classic and current, mod style revives the dynamic designs of the past and gives them a contemporary spin. Drew Hamilton explains that shag carpeting, bright graphics, curving lines and sculptural shapes add to a fresh look that will fit every room of the house:

  • Have you ripped up your shag carpeting, thrown out your egg chair and painted all of your orange furniture brown? Big mistake because mod decor is back! Mod is a mix of old and new--it takes the neat stuff from mid century and infuses it with a little bit of modern technology for an updated look for today.

Some mod materials include plastics in bright colors such as orange, red and sometimes white, microfibers, shag rugs and leather.

  • Mod isn't the same thing as mid-century modern. Mid-century modern has infused a lot of the details seen in mod design but mod is current with its use of punchy graphics and shags. The lines and forms of mid-century pieces, such as the hourglass shape, are the influences seen in mod today.

  • If you like the mod look, but aren't ready to totally redo the living room, make the change gradually. Begin by adding a simple accent pieces like a shag rug or vibrant graphic throw pillows to a sofa.

  • With all of your great mod pieces, don't forget about lighting. Think chrome and plastic. You'll get a great look, great light and it'll keep your modern theme going throughout the room.
