In the laid-back ‘50s, formal Victorians and classic revival homes were replaced with a new kid on the block: the ranch.
The 1950s brought a housing boom to America as GIs moved their families to the suburbs in droves. Levittown, Penn., became the model for mass-produced homes with similar communities popping up all over the East Coast. Out West, architects like Eichler and Schindler created homes to suit the family's changing needs, complete with a garage for the family car.
