Interior architect Paul Nadolny created a unique room divider to set a contemporary tone in an all-purpose living space. His client wanted a multipurpose space that encompassed a sitting area and a kitchen/eating space, but also wanted some division between the two areas. To achieve this, they designed a large room divider to segment the spaces. Reaching to the ceiling and full of angles, each side of the large column has built-ins fitting each area's purpose. It's constructed of cedar wood and laminated materials in a pale earthy green color.
Here are some of the other design strategies he employed to create a soothing space that blends perfectly with its wooded surroundings:
- The sitting area, anchored by a rust and black wool geometric carpet over bamboo flooring, features a squared-off taupe sofa and a pair of black leather chairs with metal detailing, also with clean, square edges. An angular black slate coffee table is between them. A small gas-powered fireplace adds warmth, while allowing a see-through view to the breakfast nook.
- The informal breakfast area features a small rectangular aluminum table set with taupe webbed-fabric chairs to mimic the contrast of materials in the divider. A flat panel TV on the side wall is housed in a custom cabinet, along with other electronics.
- The kitchen is a small but functional space, with stainless appliances and custom wood, metal and corrugated laminate cabinets that are a part of the large divider. Lines are also clean and straight, in keeping with the contemporary designs elsewhere.
