A spring bouquet oil painting next to the bed brightens the room with just the right amount of color.
Getting a good night's rest is easy to do in a comfortable country bedroom. Sue Balmforth created two such rooms in her Malibu home by mixing French and American antiques. One bedroom combines a blue decorative antique bed with a painted farmhouse storage cabinet that now serves as an armoire. A sisal rug topped with a needlepoint floral rug accents the space and gives it texture. She also used wicker in this bedroom by adding a functional chair and bedside table. In a second bedroom, a French floral painted headboard is used and combined with an oversized French armoire. An American table, mirror and wicker lamps accent this country bedroom.

To create a cozy bedroom retreat in your country home:

  • Combine European touches in the room by mixing wood tones.
  • Use a variety of textures such as sisal, velvet and denim in the room.
  • Incorporate at least one large piece of furniture into the room's decor to add visual appeal.
