Figure C
Designer Shirley Horowitz gives tips on Colonial furniture and how to use it in your decor:
  • Colonial furniture is anything from before the colonies revolted (1700s or 1800s ) up until the Revolution.
  • A low boy (without an upper chest) is a William and Mary piece from the late 1600s. Most of these pieces were named after the King and Queen of the time. Curved stretchers are characteristic of William and Mary and add support to the bottom of the piece (figure A) as they were moved often.
  • Jacobean pieces, like a large Barley twist candlestick, are from the mid-1600s (figure B).
  • A tea caddy from this period has seams that are folded to make the corners.
  • This ballot box started the term being "black balled" because it required a white or black ball for voting (figure B). A black ball was put in to vote "no" to a proposition .
  • During the 18th century, an old jar from Japan would have been used as a container , but it has been made into a lamp for the modern home (figure B).
  • A tilt-top table was used for tea or as a fire screen when tilted up. Today, this piece can be a game table or put between two Queen Anne chairs.
  • Queen Anne chair legs imitate the leg of an animal.
  • Incorporate an 18th-century toilet as a cocktail table or planter (figure C). Use it near the hearth to hold pinecones for a seasonal piece.
