Martling distressed an Asian-style cabinet, then painted in a display of Chinese plates above.
Using French painting techniques, designer Lisa Martling shows Kitty Bartholomew how she embellished the walls in her home. In an entryway, she attached a thin, oversized piece of muslin cut in the shape of a kimono to the wall with wallpaper paste. Using latex paint, she painted the muslin kimono and added a trompe l'oeil effect with a bamboo pole and ribbon painted to look like the kimono was suspended from them.

In the dining room, she distressed an Asian-style cabinet, and using the trompe l'oeil effect again, painted in a display of Chinese plates above the cabinet. She completed the tableaux with Asian accessories on the cabinet.
