Kitty Bartholomew explores the reviving popularity of Asian-inspired decorating in Western homes with three designers who have used an eclectic approach to incorporating these elements into residential interiors.

Designer Brad Blair wanted to express the serenity and harmony of Asian design in his home, and to avoid what he calls the "Hong Kong airport gift shop" look. To do this, he used a small family of colors - cream, taupe, brown and camel - that provided a quiet, simple backdrop. A few well-chosen pieces, like an antique Japanese kitchen cabinet, a textural piece of Asian clothing displayed over the fireplace and a deeply toned bamboo screen, add drama and interest. Blair enjoys mixing compatible pieces from different countries. He uses two large embossed Persian platters over the beds in the guest room, and combines an Indian table with a Portuguese cabinet in another room. He designed a large but simple slate water fountain for the entry , noting that water is the center of all living things.
